Ian Kennedy Update

I haven’t been much of an Ian Kennedy fan, mainly because I think he has a bad attitude,  an attitude flooded with immaturity, that would enable the city of New York (media, fans) to eat him alive.

Regardless of my personal opinion of him, I felt bad when he was diagnosed with an aneurysm in his right arm (shades of David Cone‘s injury in 1996, no?) earlier this season.  Kennedy, though four games with AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, was 1-0 with an ERA around 1.59.  Let’s just say that we wouldn’t have seen Sergio Mitre or Chad Gaudin start for the Yanks this year unless Kennedy faltered first.

Kennedy never got the chance because of his injury, but the Yanks are hopeful for his future.  He just started throwing from a mound, sticking with fastballs and changeups for now, until he rebuilds some arm strength.  Aside from the “anxiety disorder” that prevents a pitcher from throwing strikes a la Rick Ankiel, an aneurysm must be the most frightening injury for a pitcher.  Your hand/arm goes numb and you can’t feel a thing.

I’m happy to hear Kennedy is doing better and I have a feeling we’ll see him throw a few innings in the Gulf Coast League before the season is up, then we’ll have to monitor him in fall and/or winter leagues to see if he can make it back to Scranton next year.
