Bolstering the Bench

Can someone please explain to me why Angel Berroa is on the Yankee roster?  They Yanks already have Ramiro Pena on the bench as a backup infielder and Berroa is averaging just about one at bat every week and a half.  Seems like a wasted roster spot to me.  A better option could be Shelley Duncan, the likeable corner outfielder/first baseman would be a good power bat off the bench.   He leads the International League in home runs by a mile (21) and has posted a respectable .296 batting average.

In addition, why is Brett Tomko still around?  For some reason, the Yanks continue to use him despite his 6.28 ERA, 9 walks and 6 strikeouts.  Wouldn’t it be better to replace the 36-year old Tomko with Mark Melancon?  I know Melancon wasn’t necessarily dynamite when he was first brought up earlier in the year, but it’s time to give the young guy a real chance.  He’s dominated the IL with 40 strikeouts in 31 innings with only 7 walks.

Deep teams win championships and it’s time for the Yanks to improve their bench and back of the bullpen.

Couldn’t agree more with you on this one Rob. Seems like the Yanks are always slow to infuse new young talent for fear that they won’t be able to handle the bigs. Yeah, some might get some bumps and bruises, but that’s all part of growing into being an effective major leaguer
