All of a Sudden it’s Francisco Cervelli (Who?)

Oh boy.  Name that Molina goes down yesterday and it put on the shelf for 15 days.  Nice.  If you’re following along on the Yankees depth chart, that means they had to go down to AA-Trenton and call up Francisco Cervelli, the only other catcher on the 40-man roster.  To make matters worse, with both Yankee catchers on the DL, the team had to make a roster move today and purchased the contract of Kevin Cash, who was down at AAA-Scranton/Wilkes Barre.  (It’s my guess that Angel Berroa gets DFA’d to clear a spot on the 40 man).

Actually, I was at Cervelli’s major league debut last September, but the amount of time he’s logged at the big league level only amounts to 4 games and 7 at-bats.  The Yanks do have two kids down in A ball, Jesus Montero and Austin Romine, who are supposed to be decent, but it’s much too soon to bring them all the way up to the show (although Montero is killing the ball, Romine is better defensively and it’s expected that Montero gets moved out from behind the plate).

Let’s hope the Yankees can piece something together at catcher (THE most critical position, defensively) for the next couple weeks.  The most important part of catching is pitch-calling, not hitting.  I just hope that a young guy like Cervelli can handle the Yankee veterans.
