The Yankee Switch-Pitcher

This is just cool.  In case you haven’t heard, a couple of years back, the Yankees drafted a pitcher, named Pat Venditte, that can throw with either hand.  In this week’s ESPN: The Magazine, Rick Reilly wrote this article about Venditte.

I’ve been trying to follow this guy since the Yanks drafted him, because I think it’s a really interesting story.  Last year, he was in Staten Island (Low A Ball) and this season, he’s in Charleston (High A).  He’s a big time novelty, but wouldn’t it be cool if he actually became a decent MLB reliever?  He has pretty good numbers so far, but he’s just in A ball.

Last year, when he came into pitch, he had to face  a switch-hitter, so all hell broke loose when the umpires couldn’t decide who needed to declare their “handedness” for that at-bat first.  Here’s the video:
