Watch Out for the A’s in 2009

After spending seven years with the Yanks “The Big G,” Jason Giambi, has returned to Oakland and will provide a veteran bat at the heart of the order that could lead the A’s to challenge Anaheim (or whoever they are this year) for AL West supremecy.

In addition to Giambi, Oakland has also added Orlando Cabrera, Matt Holliday, and Nomar Garciaparra.  The A’s will surely deal Bobby Crosby now that they have a logjam of middle infielders, but the important thing to note about Oakland is that Billy Beane has done it again.  Check out the lineup he has assembled this off-season in an effort to compete for the division title:

  1. Orlando Cabrera, SS
  2. Ryan Sweeney, CF
  3. Matt Holliday, LF
  4. Jason Giambi, 1B
  5. Jack Cust, DH
  6. Eric Chavez, 3B
  7. Travis Buck, RF
  8. Mark Ellis, 2B
  9. Kurt Suzuki, C

I’m not pretending to be an A’s expert, but rearrange these hitters anyway you want and that’s a nice lineup if everyone stays healthy – a big if with this team.  With a pretty decent young starting rotation, I think the A’s could surprise people and give the Angels a fight for the AL West crown.
